Good morning lovelies,
On Tuesday I promised you that I was going to try and give you some more fun around here, and I’m not someone who likes to disappoint. I’ve thought about doing a top ten tracks type post for a while but it seemed a bit random in amongst all of the other stuff that I have going on here on my blog, but now that I’m trying to add more fun, Top 10 on Thursdays seemed like a perfect time! I wanted this to be a chance for you to know me better, my way of thinking and who I really am, as a person as well as a blogger. Are you ready to get stuck into a world of electronic rock and cheesy pop without a current chart hit in sight? Get ready for some great and uplifting tunes..
1. Ellie Goulding – Love Me Like You Do
This remains at the top of the list for me and has done since day dot. Guilty confession: the first time I heard this song, I thought it was weird for the way that Ellie repeats in parts of the song, and then the first movie happened, and then everytime they played it on the radio in the mornings Wolfie would pull me close and snuggle me and it just became ‘our song’ after that. Wolfie too lost his Mum when he was young and he has struggled every since, but this movie touched a nerve for us. It is possible for broken people to find love and have a strong and wonderful relationship, and we are living proof of that. In fact, we both agreed that had the movie come our two years earlier, this song would have been our first dance!
2. Avril Lavigne ft Marilyn Manson – Bad Girl
This song is for all the brats out there! It’s so full of sass and attitude and I love it for that reason! It starts with “just lay your head in Daddy’s lap..” and references to choking throughout, so it’s definitely got some kinky connotations to it. It’s a “hot and hard” kind of anthem which is based on lust and need. It’s poppy and fun with plenty of shamelessly R-rated hints thrown in, as you would expect from an Avril & Marilyn duet.
3. Camilla Cabello – Liar
One that just resonates when I feel all confused, when I’m so sure that all I want is a normal life with a normal relationship, and yet Wolfie does or says something that leaves me wanting that little bit something different. It’s really good for light background sing-along music when I’m cooking, too. I’ve long loved music with Latin influences, and this is just the latest addition to my playlist!
4. Kehlani – Gangster
Okay.. so for this song, I’m not actually going to give you the music video, but rather my favourite scene from Suicide Squad in which this song is the backing track. The love that Harley demonstrates for Mr J is so palpable, she is willing to suffer for him and live for him, which is a feeling I (and many of my alt-lifestyle friends) are all too familiar with. She doesn’t know what she’s getting herself into, but she loves Joker so much that she’s willing to accept it and trust him. Swoon!
PS. If you want the original music video, it’s here.
5. Britney Spears – Circus
I love this song! Again, it’s so full of attitude and it talks about leading, rather than following, which really speaks to me. The first lines of this song are also very familiar for me as I find that some guys really are intimdated by my presence, but that’s okay, girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do.
6. Depeche Mode – Corrupt
Everytime the ‘vanillas’ mention fuzzy handcuffs and feather dusters to me, this song goes through my head. If you like vampires, electro-rock and dark and sexy lyrics… I give you this video. Much to my annoyance though, there’s a bridge that’s missing from this video (possibly due to it’s mention of drugs) which can be found in this lyric video, here.
7. Alexander Rybak – That’s How You Write A Song
If there was a blogging anthem, this probably had to be it. This is like my go-to when I get stuck because if it applies to writing a song, it kind of applies to blogging too. As the first lyric suggests, “if you’ve got a minute, get down your idea”.. That’s so crucial with blogging! The body and images that make up your post can wait. The first step of any blog post starts at your ideas – always!
8. Bebe Rexha – I’m Gonna Show You Crazy
If you listen to any one of these songs, make it this one. As someone who grew up being told that I wasn’t normal, this song was like my calling. It’s my reminder that it’s okay to be different and to like different things, you don’t need to try and fit in. Add this song to your playlist and if you ever feel like you aren’t good enough, play it. Let it be my message to you, right there and in the moment, that you are enough, exactly as you are.
9. Britney Spears – Criminal
Matt would tell you that this song should be number 1 on my list given how often I play it but, I’ve only very recently discovered it, so it gets to be number 9 instead. There’s nothing really meaningful or inspiring about this song, but it talks about loving a man who you know isn’t a good choice for you, but you just can’t help yourself. When I started dating Matt, I went through a lot of tension between him and my Mum, especially on the days when I came home with hickeys and bruises where we’d gotten a little too handsy with one another and I do recall an occasion whereby my mother wrote to me to tell me that he was bad news, but I didn’t give him up. Matt had a lot of insecurity at home and he went from job to job, but he’s now worked in the same company for 7 years and is appreciated by managers across the board. The good news is, now that my Mum has seen how loving and protective he is of me, she absolutely adores Matt now and will sometimes tell me off and stick up for him instead!
10. Rachel House & Auli’i Cravalho – I Am Moana (Song Of The Ancestors)
I only actually watched Moana for the first time this year, and already, this song makes my top ten. For me, this song was very emotional after the loss of my father. I carry my father in my heart and he reminds me of who I am and what I am here to do. While my family grieved, I felt a strength inside me, a determination, I had to do his work. There was no way that I could be an admin assistant or a shelf stacker and accept the status quo. Like I’ve said above, some of us are just meant to upset the apple cart!
These two didn’t make it to the top 10 according to Google Play music, and I’m gutted because I think they should be up there, so I’m adding them for you anyway because I think my reasons for adding them justify the cause!
11. Danny Gokey – The Comeback
Having grown up with disabilities and low self-esteem, this song reminds me to keep going and keep trying, no matter what happens. It’s upbeat and energetic, I love it. It also talks about your doubters too and how some people won’t believe in you, and how, if you just believe in yourself, even you can achieve your potential- you can make your own comeback!
12. Britney Spears – If U Seek Amy
Okay, so, this is one of the most controversial songs on my music library, but it’s been played and played lately because of some stuff going on, so I thought it deserved a mention. I wrote about a week ago in this post about having other bloggers who hate you. It happens people, unfortunately, it happens. While it’s all well and good dealing with these matters as a blogger, it’s important to remember that behind every blog is a real person, a living, breathing person, with many other facets that we might not get to know, and I too am more than just my blog. We can never get to know one another based on a blog alone, and for me, this song says that. It’s about saying “before you judge me and decide that you hate me, you should first get to know all of me, not just the blogger side of me that you don’t like.”
I don’t think my readers actually want to f*** me (although some might, and I’m truly honoured if that’s what keeps you awake at night!) but for me, the ‘f*** me’ in this sense is more about the people who want to be around me and to know me. I get likes, comments and followers nearly every day, I get incoming letters regularly on Slowly and so I really won’t let the thoughts and opinions of one or two people hold me back. If I find that a vast majority of my readers actually hate my guts, that’s when I’m going to worry more about what I do!
Alright my lovelies, that’s my top ten (plus two!) music tracks. How many of these have you listened to? What songs make your top ten? Do let me know in the comments!
What top ten would you like me to cover next week? I’d love to hear your ideas!
